Never one’s to outdo themselves, Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga (2007) finds Spoon writing more of their similarly challenging and bookish rock, but the only difference here is that they’ve added a brass section, much to their chagrin. Their stuffy little funky tunes are full of indie nods and prods and generally are smarter-than-thou in the most inoffensive way possible, but it was Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga’s momentary lapse into success (i.e. the band that scored a #1 out of nowhere) that propelled Spoon to reject their pedigree, as crafted thus far, in favor of their newer abrasions found on Transference (see here). Regardless, Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga is more of the same, and that’s never a bad thing. Crafty and tight, but with enough room around the edges to impress a rough or more hewn feeling to the music, it is smartly arty and appropriately erudite. Spoon are masters of the modern chart topper and Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga is their textbook example.
