The Black Lips are the kinda band you wished played at every party you went to in college. They’re just raucous, asshole-rific fun. They don’t pull punches (when they fight, they go all out - just ask Wavves), nor do they make an concessions for the nay-sayers. So on Good, Bad Not Evil (2007), they made sure that they got heard loud and clear, initiating their very scrappy, but unbelievably convincing rock’n’roll takeover; since then it’s been anything but clear sailing, but the Georgian boys keep their wits about them and deliver a one-two Southern scuzz-rock boogie like no one else. From the muddy banks of “Katrina” to the dizzy dropout strut of “Bad Kids”, Black Lips deliver some of the most honest and dumbest-yet-awesomely cool rock around, and they don’t even give a damn. That’s why they’re just so cool. They’re like a whole gang of James Dean’s, sluggin’ away at their beers and puffin’ like chimneys, but still mindful enough to craft the best goddamn good ole’ boy bonanza of a record in years. One of the definitive gems on the Noughties.
