Cerebral and haunting, Goblin set out to create the most frighteningly real and eerily fantastical film soundtrack for the movie Suspiria (1977). But it doesn’t stop there; they raise the bar for aural and audial disharmony and horror - Suspiria, always a visually arresting movie is nothing in it’s entirety without it’s soundtrack. Jangling metallic chants and thumping evil-in-the-night drums create a scarily tangible air of fear and loathing, investing the film with an even greater supernatural and repugnant sense of purpose and drive. The chiming motif that repeats again and again is chillingly real and claustrophobic, but airily broad and inclusive. The dichotomy of horror and magic that Goblin conjure with their instrumentations is a truly academic approximation of fear in its purest form - wonderfully esoteric yet so terrifyingly familiar and vivid.
