Nothing sums up the early Noughties like LCD Soundsystem, and on their self-titled debut, James Murphy takes all his collected knowledge and credos as someone “who was there” and compacts it into just over 100 minutes of cross-genre mashups and giddy-up boogie-downs. While 2005 is only five years behind us, LCD Soundsystem still hit like a punch to the gut when it dropped, initiating itself upon the masses with the furious call-out of “Losing My Edge”, ironic dance-punk bombs like “Daft Punk is Playing at My House” amongst others. Namedropping and beat-matching was their mantra, and LCD Soundsystem became the guiding light in the hazy, after hours crawl that is hipsterdom. But as James Murphy himself was the founder of DFA, a musical institution more so than a product of their times, LCD Soundsystem backup their narcissism with very concrete audio evidence. The beats are smart, and the lyrics are smarter, and the whole attitude is smart-than-thou, but it is never boring or unfocused. LCD Soundsystem plays like a manifesto on the dancefloor - political, but never boring. Their message is always right there in front of us: overthrow the DJ.
